Sonrisa Gives Back

"Have an Attitude of Gratitude".  A simple but powerful saying repeated thousands of times over the years by Father Pat Tobin, one of the founders of Harvesters Food Bank in the greater Kansas City Area. Over the years when I was teaching in the classroom I paraphrased his sloglan and and posted it on my chalkboark as a constant reminder to my students of just how fortunate we are.http://www.harvesters.org/WhoWeAre/Index.asp?Reference=BackSnack

In keeping with that spirit of gratitude, earlier this month Sonrisa sponsored an event for the Harvesters Backsnack Program and is partnering with them to raise awareness about the area school children who are food insecure.  Sonrisa also donated to the Harvest Ball Society last weekend and we were happy to see so many of our favorite clients at the event which was the 25th Harvest Ball Celebration.http://www.harvestball.org/ As a company we have also adopted a 9 member family fron the Salvation Army. That same family has also been designated by Sandi Martin Hennier winner of Sonrisa's "Kindness Counts Philanthropy" to receive the cash award associated with that award.

At Sonrisa, all of us are committed to giving back to the local community and now we have the opportunity to extend our reach internationally. Last month I met a fellow presenter at the annual Green Spa Congress, Jennifer Trubenbach who is The Executive Director of Operation Of Hope. Operation of Hope sends surgical teams to Africa and Latin America to repair facial deformities among the poorest of the poor. Jennifer loved our company name Sonrisa because in Spanish it means to smile. She asked if we had any shirts with our logo because in Latin America they actually facilitate smiles to those who were unable to smile because of facial deformities. We are sending them 24 shirts and 17 hats this week and in 2012 donating one dollar for every facial as a way to continue the support.http://www.operationofhope.org/

We started this company over 3 years ago and this community has blessed each and every one of us and it is up to us to show our "Attitude of Gratitude".

Back to the Future with sugar

Back to the Future with Sugar

More food manufacturers and restaurants are responding to consumer demand by working to re-introduce sugar, honey or other natural sweeteners back into soft drinks and food recipes in place of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).  The scientific debate on whether corn syrup has a more negative impact on your health than sugar will rage on for years but in the meantime, another powerful force is driving this change - marketing and consumer perception.

Many consumers, professional chefs and even some manufacturers are convinced, or are convincing that sugar is a more wholesome, natural and desirable ingredient.  Natural sugar is trendy again. In response, the Corn Refiners Association is seeking approval from the FDA to rename HCFS as “Corn Sugar” and is now running frequent television adds promoting the natural goodness of sweeteners derived from corn.

Personally and based on the research I’ve read, I’m on the side of sugar.  But this could be a long, slow change process because HCFS is so deeply rooted in U.S. food production today - and the manufacturers and associations have very effective lobbyists to protect their interests.  At the end of the day though, the primary barrier to widespread replacement of HCFS by sugar will be the cost - sugar is a more costly ingredient, not to mention the costs that would be passed along by manufacturers to reformulate their brands with natural sweeteners.  This is the same, practical barrier to the growth of organic food consumption as well. If given the choice I’ll opt for products sweetened with sugar - that includes the ‘new’ sugar sweetened Coke and Pepsi products that are available on special occasions while the companies test for consumer demand and willingness to pay.

In the mean time, the old adage “all things in moderation” applies here perfectly.  The perception of sugar as more wholesome doesn’t mean you benefit from eating more of it. Sugar is a sometimes food for me. I use stevia to sweeten my tea or berries.  Conversely, a little bit of corn syrup isn’t damaging to your overall health either.  However, consuming too much of either can be hazardous to your health no matter how you measure it.  I just hope that as part of this trend C&H sugar will resurrect their television ads from my youth - I remember that catch jingle well even today!

Staycations:

Staycations:  The Alternative to Travel

Summer is finally here and vacation season is upon us.  Even though fuel prices have dropped recently the cost to drive to a regional vacation spot take a flight to some far away destination can still be daunting.  With the logistical and financial challenges related to travel today more and more people are opting to give up vacations for so-called “Staycations” - taking time off from work to enjoy life at home and in your own area.

In contrast to destination vacations you can feel like you are at home - a comfortable bed, familiar surroundings and a kitchen available 24 hours a day to make your stay enjoyable.  Those opting to stay home for vacations enjoy the freedom to do what they want whenever they want rather than feel compelled to go, go, go to get their money’s worth on a trip.  It gives others the chance to explore new surroundings or visit local landmarks, museums, shopping areas or attractions they’ve always been meaning to see, but never found the time.

If you are interested in trying a ‘staycation’ this year the Kansas City area is replete with interesting things to see and do.  Not to mention pools and parks where you can choose to do little or nothing but enjoy.  A quick search of the internet turned up a variety of things to see and do locally including:

Nelson Atkins Museum of Art:  The buildings themselves are works of art with the new addition rated one of the top five most beautiful buildings in the world
Kemper Museum of Modern Art:  The soaring, contemporary lobby gives some insight in to the exhibits within
Nerman Museum of Modern Art:  The largest contemporary art museum in four states
National World War I Museum:  Recently rebuilt and designated as the nation’s official World War I museum.
Boulevard Brewing Company:  The largest specialty brewer in the Midwest and Kansas City’s official beer.
Arabia Steamboat Museum:  An amazing walk back through time in the City Market
Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun:  For the child in all of us
Schlitterbahn Water Park:  The newest area water park
18th and Vine District:  Negro League Hall of Fame, GEM Theater, Jazz Hall of Fame and great restaurants
Frontier Army Museum:  Fort Leavenworth’s role in westward expansion
Haskell Indian Nation’s University:  A cultural center and traditional art and artifact museum
Excelsior Springs Hall of Waters and Cultural Museum:  The famous water bar and Elm’s Hotel and Spa
Lakeside Nature Center:  Wildlife Education Center and programs, hiking trails, wildlife exhibit
Loose Park:  Urban park with wading pool, civil war markers and rose garden
Truman Library:  The area’s presidential library featuring historical exhibits from the Harry S. Truman era
The Money Museum at Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City:  Watch millions of dollars in the making
Sporting Kansas City:  The professional Soccer team and new world class stadium facility
Powell Gardens:  Featuring the new Jurassic Garden exhibit

After fighting airport security, crowds and an extended hotel stay during a trip I took this week I’m ready to stay close to home this summer and experience what our area has to offer, from downtown Parkville to the new restaurants on the West Side and West Bottoms. Last but not least my vacation spa services at Sonrisa, massage, facial. manicure, pedicure and summer highlights for my hair-sounds perfect

10 Tips to help Winter Skin and Hair

Ten tips to help Winter Dry Hair and Skin
1.Stay hydrated. Just because you’re not sweating as much doesn’t mean you can’t get dehydrated. Drinking enough water will help keep your skin and your lips hydrated.

2. Moisturize. I use Eminence Organics, Eminence Couperose C serum, and Terra Jewel Organic Rose Hydrosol for my face and heavier organic body butters for my body. There is a new Alba product that you can get from Whole Foods called UN-Petroleum Jelly. It works like vaseline but is plant based.

3. Go for a gentler cleanser. I like fatted soaps and Aveda body cleansers.

4. Protect your hands. Chapped hands can be so painful.  Remember to wear gloves to protect your skin. During flu season I use hand sanitizer constantly. Use an alcohol free moisturizing product from a health store.  My favorite hand cream is AVEDA Hand relief
and I use  it following washing and using hand sanitizer.

5. Avoid licking your lips.  The dry air (especially inside) can make your lips BEG for moisture.  It’s so hard to avoid doing, but so important.  Use a lip balm and keep yourself hydrated by drinking water. Don’t use a petroleum based lip balm. Use a natural balm made from shea butter or beeswax.  Your lips will thank you, and you can avoid the nastiness of having badly chapped lips!

6. Invest in a humidifier.  You can bring one to the office. I saw a cool mist humidifier for $39.00 at Walgreens.

7.  Try to exfoliate, but don’t go overboard.  Remember to moisturize after using a face or body scrub.

8.  Don’t forget your feet!  Just because you’re not showing them off as much doesn’t mean you should neglect them.  I get regular pedicures throughout the year, and you can exfoliate and moisturize your feet very easily at home.

9. Keep using sunscreen.  Use sunscreen EVERYDAY, regardless of the season. . My favorite is Eminence tropical Vanilla sun Cream with an SPF of 32

10. For your hair use a gentle shampoo and use conditioner every time you clean your hair. Use the warm setting on the blow dryer in the winter.  Remember how the hot air from the furnace is bad for your skin?  Well imagine what the hot air aimed at your tresses is doing!  If you must, be sure to invest in heat styling products to protect your hair from the damage of getting dried out.  No one wants static-y hair or split ends!  There are also some GREAT remedies for damaged hair like Aveda’s Damage Remedy you can find or ask your stylist for a deep conditioning hair spa treatment if you’re suffering from dry winter hair.

No Snake Oil Sold Here

In my last blog entry I talked about real women, beauty and authenticity. As an owner of a Green Spa in the European tradition we offer skin  rejuvenation services that are non invasive and produce results. We have convinced clients that plant based enzyme peels work without damage and downtime. We offer alternatives to surgery, lasers and deep chemical peels with no downtime, sedatives or scarring. I will not promote that which will not work or will expose my employees or clients to dangerous toxins. Here is the independent research on both of the anti aging services that we use. Don't be impressed by Oprah's or any other celebrity endorsement. Look at the science. We combine two technologies,  LED photo rejuvenation and CACI micro-current  stimulation and rejuvenation for incredible results.

LED light

AGING? ACNE? • Soli-Tone LED Rejuvenating Light Therapy will help!!

Face Lift Without Surgery!

Your skin has the natural ability to absorb infrared wavelengths of light and use the energy from this type of light as a source to stimulate cellular regeneration. Infrared LED Light Therapy was discovered by NASA as a method of stimulating cellular regeneration and pain relief and was used in the Space Program as a method of treatment in space. Research has found that LED Light Therapy can reverse and control the visible signs of aging and acne, tightening your skin to make you look years younger. This is done without harsh chemical treatments or invasive surgical procedures. Soli-Tone LED Light Therapy clients see and feel a dramatic tightening of skin, smoothing of wrinkles and rough spots, disappearing blemishes, softening of redness and shrinking of pore size.

The use of red and infrared non laser light has been shown to have beneficial effects in skin rejuvenation, not by thermal damage but through photobiomodulative reactions. The various tissue and cell types in the skin have their own absorption characteristics, absorbing light at specific wavelengths. Studies have demonstrated that selective wavelengths have stimulatory effects on cell types. Most importantly this has been demonstrated in the formation of collagen precursors and enzymes associated with cellular development. This technology offers a means of delivering light to treat large surface areas with no significant adverse effects. A detailed study by Lee and colleagues showed significant wrinkle reduction, up to a maximum of 36% and improvement in skin tone.20

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17566756

Micro current therapy, the favorite non-surgical treatment for celebrities and royalty in Europe, has now been “discovered” in the USA. Oprah, “Queer Eye” and Dr Phil recently praised micro current for its dramatic anti-aging effect.

A recent University of Washington study proved that micro current increases your skin’s elastin fibers by 45%, collagen by 10% and the number of blood vessels by 35%. It can increase ATP, your body’s building block, by 500%. This is how CACI can “re-sculpt” your face, getting rid of lines and wrinkles and toning your facial muscles.

CACI, Europe’s leading micro current system, is used in more than 3,000 salons in Europe and more than 5,000 worldwide.

It is a favorite of many celebrities past and present and is the treatment Hollywood stars use when they don’t want a facelift.

WHAT WILL CACI DO FOR YOU

In the hands of a skilled operator CACI- Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument, can make you look like you’ve had a facelift – at a fraction of the cost and with no risk or scarring. CACI will:

Increase your skin’s elastin fibers

Increase the production of your natural collagen

Increase the number of blood vessels and therefore the levels of oxygen available to your skin

Increase your levels of adenosine triphosphate – your body’s building block

Help make your face look smoother and fresher

Help reduce heavy lines and remove fine lines and wrinkles

Tone your facial muscles

Make you look younger

After a course of CACI treatments you’ll look relaxed, refreshed – and younger. Your friends will probably ask you if you’ve been on a long, relaxing holiday – it’s that good.

However please note that CACI requires a skilled operator that has been carefully trained in the correct movements and that knows which muscles in your face need tightening and which need relaxing.

Real Women of Clay and Platte County

Real Women of Clay and Platte County
This is offered in response to a teenage girl I saw recently, who wished her mom was more like the “Real Housewives” of Orange County.
I am in the health and beauty industry so I interact with hundreds of women from Clay and Platte County each month; the contrast to the Real Housewives reality programs is glaring.
Television media is saturated with artifice and the cult of celebrity. While adults will view the shows as entertainment, I do not want this type of programming shaping culture or offering up these women as potential role models for young girls. I would like to offer the following observations about the real women in my world.
Observation 1- those of us who are married are married to our spouses, not our houses. Woman may be homemakers, domestic divas or a myriad of other occupations. I cannot remember the last time that I have heard any woman identify herself as a housewife.
Observation 2 – 99.9% of the women I meet are gracious instead of gauche, authentic as opposed to artificial, and compassionate rather than calloused.
Observation 3- The “Real” housewives of celebrity do not seem to raise anything of value. We raise kids, money for charity, advocacy for great causes and the flag.
Observation 4- we do not embarrass our children by our dress or demeanor.
Observation 5- I have never witnessed any arguments between real women about inappropriate sexual advances towards their spouses, sons or fathers,
Observation 6- We enjoy fashion, cosmetics, hairstyles, handbags, shoes and shopping but are not enslaved by any of the aforementioned pursuits.
Observation 7-Our success comes from our hard work and accomplishments. We may not be considered trophy wives in the conventional context but our spouses treasure our counsel, love and support.
Observation 8- we are genuinely pleased for our friend or sister’s success.
Observation 9- we remind one another not to sweat the small stuff but to remember to schedule our mammograms.
Observation 10- a personal observation or admission- we don’t judge those who choose to enhance their appearances, we applaud decisions that empower and improve. I have enhanced my nails, eyelashes and hair color, but more importantly I’ve enhanced my community and country with my contributions.

Young lady, you owe your mother an apology. Now you get real and get her something nice for Mother’s Day! (If you were my daughter I would be sending you on a little guilt trip!)

Karen Kissinger, certified life and wellness coach and owner of Sonrisa Salon and Day Spa. The opinions expressed above are completely endorsed by Sonrisa, its employees, affiliates and the women we serve.

My Path to Wellness is Green

My Wellness Path is Green:
After a long career as a high school teacher and coach I found a new vocation as a life and wellness coach.  This career change occurred after completing a serious effort to regain my own personal health.  Since then I have continued my role as a professional educator but directed towards teaching others about what it takes to attain healthy lifestyles and relationships.  Through years of training and research I have discovered the healthiest lifestyle is green and natural which can be promoted through -

Organic and locally grown food free of chemicals and pesticides
Hydration featuring purified water and eliminating corn syrup sweetened drinks
Varied forms of movement including weight training, walking, Pilates, Qigong and Tai Chi
Avoidance of bph plastic containers that transfer toxins into our food and water
Holistic practices that promote the mind, body, spirit connection
Expansive social networks of friends and families leads to longevity and health
Community connections -eco friendly practices of supporting local business owners
Altruism and philanthropy; giving back through volunteerism or contributions to local charities

As part of my healthy lifestyle research I was seeking a wellness spa for stress relief.  I ended up buying Sonrisa and have transformed it into the only Green Spa certified facility in the surrounding six state areas.  Sonrisa features many wellness modalities with massage, reflexology, and natural hair and make up products.  We specifically avoid chemicals and toxins that are commonly found in the cosmetic and beauty industry that can be dangerous to humans.
This year we introduced an all-new line of beauty products that are natural and organic.  Terra Jewel is a private label mineral make up line that is natural and irritant free.  The cream and liquid versions have organic bases and can be custom blended to complement anyone’s unique skin.
I don’t teach or coach in high school anymore but I am still an Educator in the area of healthy lifestyles and wellness.  Color me green for greater health and longevity.
